Texas Southern University
2001-2002 Strengthening HBGI Proposal
PH.D. Degree Project
I. PERFORMANCE REPORT
March 1, 2000 - February 28, 2001
II. PROJECT SUMMARY
The Texas Southern University Ph.D. degree program in Environmental Toxicology received $250,000 from Title III for 2000-2001. Funding provides support for student scholarships, faculty development, enhancement of library holdings, equipment, equipment maintenance and the enhancement of the Ph.D. degree program in Environmental Toxicology through a project that increases linkages, partnerships and student career enrichment. All of the above listed activities are designed to provide cutting edge instruction to students pursuing the Ph.D. degree. During the above referenced period, significant progress was made in accomplishing the objectives set forth for year one of the project.
III. PROJECT STATUS
Objective 1
Provide scholarship support to 20% of Ph.D. students.
Accomplishments
To date twenty-five students are matriculating in the Ph.D. degree program. Five students have received scholarship awards. Each scholarship recipient is in good standing and making acceptable progress towards the completion of the degree.
Objective 2
50% of core faculty will participate in Title III sponsored development activities.
Accomplishments
Of the fourteen core faculty, 15% have participated in Title III sponsored development activities under this project. The development activities included attendance at professional development conferences and workshops by five faculty members, and a Radiation Safety Workshop by Ph.D. students and 4 faculty in the Ph.D. degree program. Also students and 5 faculty in the Ph.D. degree program attended a seminar on Sickle Cell Research. One faculty member was provided training for the use of image analysis in environmental research.
Objective 3
Library holding for the Ph.D. degree program will increase by 10% over present holdings.
Accomplishments
The sum of $3,029.00 has been spent on books and reference materials for the Ph.D. degree. Before the end of the grant period, faculty members are expected to order additional library books and other educational resources. The Director of Libraries has been asked to provide base line information on the number of holdings in environmental toxicology. This will be used to determine the percent of increase at the end of the funding period for this program.
Objective 4
A development program for the Ph.D. degree will be set-up the Graduate School.
Accomplishments
The development program in support of the Ph.D. degree program is underway. Specifically, a corps of external and internal professionals have been identified to constitute an advisory committee for the program. The core plan for the implementation of a research program to support the Ph.D. degree has been developed and will be used to interface the overall enrichment program for the Ph.D. program. The Graduate School has interacted with the Office of Development in order to utilize contacts that may be used in support of the Ph.D. degree program.
Objective 5
State-of-the-art equipment will be purchased for the Ph.D. degree program.
Accomplishments
To date, $37,368 has been spent for the purchase of equipment such as a RACAL GPS/DGPS Navigator Receiver, a Gig PCMCIA Navigation Hard drive, a HEAK Higher Education Annual Kit, Pioneer New Media/Storage; and a Fiber Optic Spectrometer; and $15,000 spent on equipment maintenance.
IV. BUDGET INFORMATION
To date, 37% of the budget has been encumbered; all funds will be spent by the end of the budget period.
