I. PERFORMANCE REPORT
March 1, 2000 - February 28, 2001
II. PROJECT SUMMARY
The Texas Southern University, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is committed to fulfilling its mission to produce competitive and qualified health care professionals, especially African Americans and others under represented minorities in their respective fields, to serve in minority communities. The revised mission statement as currently articulated will be attained by:
- Supporting faculty development, faculty and student research, graduate education and other scholarly pursuits.
- Promoting community service and outreach activities.
- Recognizing cultural, environmental, racial, and socio-economic issues affecting human health and human health outcomes.
- Fostering acquisition of knowledge, critical and creative reasoning, effective communication and commitment to life-long learning.
- Inculcating knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes and values needed for exemplary patient care in an evolving health care environment.
- Fostering and supporting the profession of pharmacy and health sciences; improving patient care and quality of life; and commitment to interdisciplinary health care practices, professional leadership, continuing professional education and broad community-based public health principles of disease prevention and health promotion.
To fulfill this mission, the College has implemented specific programs with the assistance of Title III funding. These programs include media assisted distance learning programs, an advanced pharmacy practice residency program, establishment of the Office of Assessment and Evaluation, and meeting standards for re-accreditation of the professional program leading to the Doctor Pharmacy degree.
The College is committed to full implementation of programs at a 100%. The College is recommitted to have a successful program and hire full staff to continue the program efficiently. Existing faculty will support the tasks of program development, assessment and evaluation, and accreditation follow-up.
III. PROJECT STATUS
Objective 1
Increase the number of students currently enrolled in the North Harris Montgomery College District (NHMCCD) University Center off campus Pharm.D. Program.
Accomplishments
The enrollment has been increased by 50% during the year 2000. Several plans have been developed to increase the enrollment of qualified students in the program including contacting alumni, presentations at continuing education programs and alumni functions and updating the web page of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Objective 2
Increase the number of courses offered through this program by piloting new course delivery methods at this center.
Accomplishment
The Distance Pharm.D. Program was implemented at North Harris Montgomery College District with courses being offered at the post baccalaureate level. The possibility of increasing course offerings is under consideration. Existing faculty will support the tasks in formulating curriculum content into appropriate format most conducive to distance learning and will modify course content with the adaptability to new delivery methods.
Objective 3
Plan and establish a well-equipped media center (interactive television, computer terminals etc.) at TSU-COPHS with the capability of audiovisual satellite transmission of lectures and other distance education programs to remote sites.
Accomplishment
The design for construction of a state-of-the art new wing addition to Gray Hall has been completed and the construction is expected to begin by May 1, 2001. We have delayed acquiring the equipment and technologies pending the completion of the new wing addition. However, the videotaping and instructional deliveries of lectures are in progress. The college plans to hire the media specialist to develop technology and training. We are screening applications to select the best candidate.
Objective 4
Formulate current curriculum contents into appropriate format most conducive to distance learning and modify all course contents to ensure adaptability to new delivery methods such as videotapes, interactive Internet-based lectures, computerized case studies and interactive satellite transmitted lecture presentations.
Accomplishments
The videotaping and instructional deliveries of lectures are underway. The interactive satellite transmitted lecture presentation will be implemented after the media center is fully functioning and a media specialist is hired.
Objective 5
Acquire the technological equipment needed for the training of our students to significantly increase the percentage passage rates on national licensure examinations.
Accomplishments
The college has accepted the challenge to improve the test scores on national licensure examinations. Several steps have been taken to address the issue including securing instructional software to aid the students, providing computers for each faculty member and updating the student lab with new computers. The softwares are installed in the computers in the lab. Also, a plan is underway to post the software on the web page so that students can access instructional programs from anywhere. The College will sponsor a NAPLEX review class for students on April 28-30. This review will be conducted by a nationally recognized agency. Faculty led tutorial and peer tutorial programs are also in place to enhance student performance.
Objective 6
Provide training for faculty on the use of technology for course delivery during the second and third year of the grant.
Accomplishments
Several technology-training sessions which includes the Black Board , LXR and Banner were conducted for the faculty. Initiatives have been taken to hire the Media Specialist. The job description is designed to accommodate the need of implementing the media instruction and providing faculty with the necessary technology training.
Objective 7
Increase the number and types of residency and fellowships offered by Texas Southern University through collaborative initiatives with acute care and primary care institutions such as Ben Taub General Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital and Methodist Hospital and with community pharmacies.
Accomplishments
Initiatives are taken to increase the number of residency and fellowships. Presently two Community pharmacy residency has been developed in collaboration with La Porte Apothecary Inc. and diversified Managed Care Pharmacy. A position is being newly created at the level of Assistant Dean to provide leadership for the development of advanced pharmacy practice and residency programs.
Objective 8
Develop and establish a rigorous assessment and evaluation program.
Accomplishments
The Office of Assessment and Evaluation has been established with a director and a secretary in place. Alumni focus group have been organized by the office of assessment and plans are being developed for several activities. Steps have been taken to develop a database for admissions, registration, grading, reporting and tracking graduates. Two outside firms have been contacted for consulting the development of programs and hiring skilled technical person with database expertise.
IV. BUDGET INFORMATION
Sixty percent (60%) of the budget has been encumbered to date, and all funds will be exhausted at the end of the budget period.
