TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
2001-2002 Strengthening HBCU Proposal
Development
I. PERFORMANCE REPORT
March 1, 2000 - February 28, 2001
II. PROJECT SUMMARY
Limited results under the prior development leadership, resources and strategies cannot support the major beneficial changes Texas Southern University has achieved or has planned. In order to fully capitalize on broadening financial opportunities for support for university programs, an overhaul of the development infrastructure, recruitment and training of new staff, updating equipment, and a complete revision of the university's fundraising strategic approach was completed. Blackbaud software, the new market standard in major development initiatives, will greatly enhance potential for funding first identified in the Banner Alumni/Development module. A completely new development office, trained to use the Blackbaud system and guided by professional consultants, will implement the university's first major Capital Campaign. This approach will put the university squarely on the road to self-sufficiency. Funding to build an infrastructure designed to accommodate growth will enhance the TSU's planned giving programs and gift management ability. Tangible results will include a comprehensive report to donors, alumni news, centralized data reporting and decentralized access for university wide use. A major direct mail campaign and improved utilization of the university website for all donor/prospect constituencies will enhance the results of the new development efforts.
III. PROJECT STATUS
Objective 1
Fully train the development office and migrate the existing database from the Banner Alumni/Development module into Blackbaud system.
Accomplishments
The development office has already begun the preliminary work of establishing the new Development focus for the campus. Consultants for the Capital Campaign have completed the campaign plan and will also create operating policies and procedures for the development office. They will be used to support software training and advise on planned giving programs. The Blackbaud system has been purchased and the Office of Information Technology is determining the required hardware and expertise needed to maximize its use across the campus. Training on the Blackbaud system is scheduled for the entire development office staff along with designated personnel in the Office of Information Technology for purposes of database maintenance.
Objective 2
Initiation of a major Capital Campaign.
Accomplishment
The capital campaign strategy is complete. Recruitment of community and university leaders as well as corporate executives to serve as committee chairs is underway. Campaign materials are being designed for each targeted constituency for donor/prospects - including alumni, corporations, foundations, individuals and the surrounding community.
Objective 3
Improve communication with targeted constituencies
Accomplishments
Blackbaud will provide the flexibility in using the donor/prospect database to accomplish a successful direct mail campaign, targeted newsletters and ongoing contacts. Enhancement of the university website for development purposes will provide a resource for ongoing cultivation and solicitation of these constituencies between targeted giving campaigns. Analysis of the university website currently has begun and the use of current technology to upgrade the website will be used so that internal users such as administrators, faculty, staff and students will be drawn to giving as much as external donor/prospects.
IV. BUDGET INFORMATION
Ninety percent (90%) of the budget has been encumbered to date, and all funds will be exhausted at the end of the budget period.
