Texas College Work-Study Program
What does the program do?
The program provides eligible, financial needy students with jobs which enable the students to attend eligible institutions in Texas.
Who can qualify?
Students may be able to qualify if they are Texas residents, are enrolled for at least one-half of a full course load and are able to establish financial need.
Who is not eligible?
A student who receives an athletic scholarship or who is enrolled in a seminary or other program leading to ordinate or licensure to preach for a religious sector is a member of a religious order is not eligible.
Where may it be used?
Eligible students may use the funds at any public college or university in Texas or any nonprofit independent institution, which is a regular member of, or candidate for accreditation by, the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Eligible Employers
To be eligible to participate in the work-study program, an employer must:
- provide part-time employment to an eligible student in nonpartisan and nonsectarian activities; provide, insofar as is practicable, employment to an eligible student that is related to the student's academic interests; use Texas college work-study program positions only to supplement and not to supplant positions normally filled by persons not eligible to participate in the work-study program; provide not less than 30 percent of an employed student's wages and 100 percent of other employee benefits for the employed student from sources other than federal college work-study program funds, if the employer is a nonprofit entity; and
- provide not less than 50 percent of an employed student's wages and 100 percent of other employee benefits for the employed student, if the employer is a profit making entity.
Source/Allocation of Funds
Funds are appropriated by the State Legislature. 76% of the funds are allocated among public institutions based on the number of full- and at least half-time aid recipients in the prior year, 24% of funds are allocated among independent institutions, based on reported TEG need. |
Calendar - Important Dates
Dec. 1 -- report required RE amount awarded: earned.
Feb. 1 -- second report required RE awarded; earned amounts. Possible loss of funds if full allocation is not awarded. Include option to request additional funds.
July 1 -- year-end report and refunds due
July 7 -- letters sent to presidents of schools whose reports and refunds are not yet received
July 21 -- letters sent to presidents of schools whose reports and refunds are still missing, advising them of loss of funds for following year |
Potential Sanctions
Feb. 1 -- any amounts reported as unawarded are to be released back to the Coord. Bd. If < 60 percent of the awarded funds have been earned, explanations will be required to avoid loss of funds.
July 7 -- letter to relevant Presidents, cc: FAO and business office of any late reports and reminder of July 21 fund due date. Warn a school failing to meet July 21 deadline loss of funds the following year.
July 27 -- letter to Presidents. cc: FAO and business office of relevant institutions, advising them they have lost eligibility to participate in following year. |
