How Do I Apply for Financial Aid?

The financial aid process is started by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to the U.S. Department of Education. The application will require the student information. If the student is married, the spouse's information will also be required. Students under 24 are generally required to submit the parent's information; however, the FAFSA has exceptions for students in unusual circumstances. You will be required to sign the FAFSA using a FAFSA PIN number. The student and parent, if dependent, are both required to have a PIN. Filing your FAFSA through the internet reduces processing and increases accuracy of the information provided. Students requiring a paper application may call the U.S. Department of Education for assistance.

Financial Aid TV provides a variety of information to assist the student in answering some of the most common questions about the financial aid process and awards. This free service is available through the TSU Website.

The U. S. Department of Education will send a response file to Texas Southern University containing the financial and demographic data submitted on the application. This file may also contain comments on information that required follow-up by the school, was incomplete at the time of processing or signifies the school is required to complete verification on the information supplied on the FAFSA. TSU will send an email notification to the student with a list of the required documents. Students may submit documents through the mail, by fax or in person.

The Priority Deadline date for the submission of the FAFSA is April 15^th. Submitting the FAFSA early and supplying the supporting documents by April 15^th provides the best opportunity to maximize the amount of grants or “free money” in the award package.

Students have 24/7 access to their information through the TSU web account. This account allows the student to monitor the progress of their financial aid process from beginning to end. The student is able to view:

(1) the documents missing from the file,

(2) print financial aid forms required to complete the application process

(3) review the financial aid awards,

(4) accept, reduce or decline the financial aid awards,

(5) sign any applicable Master Promissory Notes,

(6) complete entrance and/or exit loan counseling

(7) complete the financial aid deferment

(8) review the status of the student account

Financial Aid Counselors are available each day to assist you with the completion of your application and answer questions you may have concerning your financial aid awards.
